I was able to go to the 2009 Jungle Park reunion and had the pleasure of spending the day with Ed Hitze Jr., Donald Davidson and Don & Chris Cumberworth. I would say that there were about 15 cars…Continue

"I'll see what I can find out. BTW, Randy Roberts always had a beautiful black #5 in gold leaf. He's won the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association 9 times. You can see it on RMMRA's website. http://www.rmmra.org/history.shtml I…"

My Dad drove midgets right after his return from WWII. He had a very successful career winning over 40 races one year driving for the Robertsons, two brothers out of Muncie, IN. Dick Fraiser use to drive the car, but Dad got the ride after Dick moved onto driving jalopies. The car was a copper color with white scallops. It was a Kurtis Kraft midget #12 and was often called the Offy killer. Ed Hitze, Sr. wrote a book on Kurtis and there is a picture of my Dad winning the feature at Anderson about 1948.

I drove sprints and midgets for 10 years in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. I was the ROY with WWAR midgets, the 1995 Paragon Sprint Car Champion, and the 1996 HARF sportsmanship award.

George, if I find out you had an oval slot track when I was at IRP and I didn't know about it, you're in deep doggy-do.

You can e-mail me at indybigjohn@roadrunner.com

Many thanks George. I'm really enjoying your posts. It's neat that you remember Southworth. I've traced the history of this car back to PePi Marchese. Did you ever run with him? I can't get anything past PePi owning it. I've contacted him, but he's in a home after his bad head injury at Eldora in 92 and unfortunately with the shape he's in, we cannot have much of a conversation.

George, if he happens to be thinking clearly, and you get a feel that possibly he could give a valid answer, could you work in a question about the black midget with the gold leaf #5 just to see if he has any memory of whom he got it from? I've had no luck in tracing the history past him and basically had to give up. This may be one last shot. Only do this if the situation is appropriate based on how he sounds to you. Many thanks, Dave.

Thanks for the info on Randy Roberts. I'll take a look at that website. I somewhat doubt it's one of his cars, as during all my searching, I was even able to talk to the guy who did the gold leafing #5 on Pepi's car. Everything just went to a dead end. It was really disappointing. Any idea where this Randy Roberts may be located now?
