Although this supermodified was banned from competition in 1980, it was built within the current rules of 1979 for Oswego. The test at Sandusky Speedway caused such a stir tracks began to ban it because it actually worked. The car was steered by the right front and right rear with the steering working in opposite directions on those wheels. The middle wheel on the right and the left wheel were the drive wheels. According to Tim Richmond who tested the car in 1979, it wasn't that hard to get used to and the car never pushed no matter how hard he drove it. The hard part was getting used to no left front tire. It was unfortunate it never got to race. Image if it had!

The most amazing thing I've seen since Smokey Yunick's sidecar. I am always amazed when a brain has an idea so radical it changes everything you thought you knew about how things work. This man should have been right up there with Colin Chapman.
Does the car still exist? If so, it needs to be in some museum, maybe even the Smithsonian.

Bill, unfortunately Mr. Reece was so angry with the banning of the 3-1 he destroyed it and built a conventional Super from the parts. He now wishes he had kept it. This car was an amazing piece and it's initial test was done at the Honda TRC in Marysville, Ohio. The car had a .060 over 427 CanAm engine and was running speeds over 200 mph. In fact the car could pull so many G's that Richmonds helmet strap kept coming loose. They solved that problem with duct tape and Tim said he wouldn't open it up because it was the first test. They then went to Sandusky and that's when their world started coming apart because word traveled how bad fast this car was. Oswego banned it by creating rules that all rear engine cars were not allowed and all four wheels must be in conventional locations. Image what supermodified racing would look like today if Ken was able to race the 3-1.
